Declaration of Independence Adopted

The Continental Congress adopts the Declaration of Independence, following Richard Henry Lee’s pivotal Lee Resolution that set the stage for American independence. Today, Alexandria honors its close connection to the nation’s founding through descendants like Sarah Caldwell “Sally” Lee Lee and Francis Lightfoot Lee II, both buried at Christ Church Episcopal Cemetery. Their family ties to Richard Henry Lee—the signer of the Declaration—are part of the broader legacy preserved at the Wilkes Street Cemetery Complex. This connection extends through Louis Albert Cazenove and Harriot E. Stuart, whose marriage linked the Lee-Fendall House to the Lee family’s legacy. Louis and Harriot, along with their children, are buried nearby at The Presbyterian Cemetery, also within the Wilkes Street Cemetery Complex.
