As winter settles in, we’re taking our usual seasonal pause from tours to avoid the chilly weather. Additionally, due to ongoing medical recovery, tours will resume no earlier than spring. In the meantime, explore our rich archives, fascinating narratives, and self-guided resources here at Gravestone Stories. Thank you for your continued support—we can’t wait to walk with you again when warmer days return!

Flags-in-the-Ground Event at Alexandria National Cemetery

May 25, 2024 @ 9:30 am - 12:00 pm

Join VFW Post 609 for the annual Flags-in-the-Ground event at Alexandria National Cemetery. The kickoff ceremony will begin at 9:30 a.m. This event invites the community to honor the more than 4,500 interred at the cemetery by placing an American flag at each grave. Among those buried are over 3,900 Union soldiers who lost their lives during the American Civil War, including 249 members of the United States Colored Troops (U.S.C.T.).

This event is free and open to the public. A ceremony will take place before the flag placement begins. Come together with fellow community members to pay tribute to the brave men and women who served our country.
