Tour Participation & Liability Disclaimer

Gravestone Stories offers historical walking tours through public and private cemeteries in Alexandria, VA. By booking or participating in a tour:

You acknowledge that tours take place outdoors and at your own risk, including walking over uneven ground and exposure to weather.
Participants are responsible for wearing appropriate footwear and clothing.
Gravestone Stories is not liable for personal injury or loss sustained during any tour.

If you have specific accessibility needs, please contact us before booking—we’ll do our best to accommodate.

Tour Cancellations

Tours may be canceled or rescheduled due to inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
We’ll notify you by email as soon as possible if a tour is postponed or canceled.
If you need to cancel your booking, please contact us at least 24 hours in advance for a refund or reschedule (depending on availability).

From Bull Run to Appomattox: The Civil War Journey of Wilmer McLean

“The war began in my front yard and ended in my parlor.”

Wilmer McLean’s now-famous quote captures his remarkable role in the American Civil War. The first major battle erupted on his farm near Bull Run, and four years later, his parlor in Appomattox hosted the surrender of General Robert E. Lee to Ulysses S. Grant—marking the war’s end on April 9, 1865. McLean’s final chapter unfolded in Alexandria, where he is buried in St. Paul’s Cemetery within the Wilkes Street Cemetery Complex.
