In response to public health concerns and new burial restrictions within Alexandria’s town limits, local congregations begin establishing new cemeteries outside the residential grid at Spring Garden Farm. In 1808, Christ Church Cemetery and Trinity Methodist Cemetery are formally established. The following year, in 1809, the Presbyterian Cemetery and St. Paul’s Episcopal Cemetery are added. Together with the earlier municipal Penny Hill Cemetery (relocated here in 1796), these new burial grounds form the foundation of what becomes known as the Wilkes Street Cemetery Complex—today home to more than 35,000 interments across thirteen historic cemeteries.
